#OCL4ED REFLECTION 1

I teach because of the passion I have in sharing knowledge with my students. The experience of walking into a classroom and having 30 or 40 pairs of eyes fixated on you, waiting for the first utter of knowledge from your lips, it is such a great honor and privilege indeed.  My country Fiji, has just started to adopt the E learning experiences, and I have just discovered what wonders it has brought to my country, in terms of making learning accessible, affordable and available through the availability of the internet.

OER has offered something more extravagant to our teachers. The problem that we face in the small island nations with accessing quality real time education resources can now be a thing of the past for Fiji. Sharing knowledge through OER is so wonderful.

It is truly stated by Aristotle that copying comes naturally to man, for that is how we begin our learning experience. Reflecting on that idea, I would like to mention here that our Pacific traditional and customary learning methods is through Oral History that is passed down from one generation to the next. A tradition that we continue to practice today. When there is a traditional ceremony, the younger generation are encouraged to attend and observe how ceremonies are conducted. Without an utterance, the expectation is there that learning through observation is the knowledge shared.

Students in Fiji are adapted naturally to the learning method that is encouraged in the flipped classroom model, "seeing and doing" is more effective than "seeing and thinking" therefore they are more prone to T.V.E.T Model learning. The video lessons available on Shared resources will enable teachers to be more effective and evolve from chalk and board to induce a more interactive and exciting classroom learning.

I have gained so much during these few sessions, and most of my learning is through the interactive method and sharing of ideas, using twitter and blogging. In all my life I have never used twitter, I have only heard about twitter, but this opportunity has got me hooked. Twitter is such a wonderful impromptu tool, as Dr Wayne has put it, and now I feel like twitting every idea that comes to mind while I am on the course.

Furthermore, I have been empowered by the new knowledge I have gained from this session, and I have taken time to share some on this amazing technology information with my colleagues, who are now interested to join.

Who owns the copyright of your teaching materials? #OCL4ED

My opinion is that I own whatever teaching materials that I have created.

OCL4ED SESSION 2 LEARNING REFLECTION

George Bernard Shaw statement on "OWNERSHIP of IDEAS" as the opening idea on that discussion set the motions of thought for me that ideas shared is the exponential expansion of knowledge. I believe, that is the reflection I have at this point in time, though there may not be new ideas, but when current ideas are shared they create new knowledge. The question I would than ask is what is new knowledge? How do we generate new Ideas? When knowledge is shared in a public domain, it generates new ideas for those who  discover these knowledge on the public domain, this creates a chain reaction with people collaborating with ideas, sharing thoughts that produces new knowledge. Knowledge that has been, reused, re tweaked, contextualized to suite geographical, socio-economical environment of that place. For example, a school teacher in Fiji, who has taught mathematics for year 12 for the past 10 years has surely run out of ideas on how to be innovative and effective in applying the curriculum in class, can surely be empowered by learning new approaches and teaching models from a teacher in Africa or India, or a small  town in Australia and America. During an OER Policy meeting last week at the University of the South Pacific, we discussed the Flipped Classroom model, further research I discovered how relevant and refreshing the Model is to today's technological environment. Refreshing in the way it appeals to the change in the inculcation of the teaching environment and appealing that it is student centered learning to its core value.
Ideas create knowledge in turn theory, theory is practiced. The idea of sharing knowledge has spawn the theoretical approach and belief of Openness, Open Educational Resources has empowered Educators to be great practicenors of classroom teaching, lecturers, education administrators and education writers. The Practicality of OER is that it is now a living idea that has Educators from around the world sharing their ideas on what we are learning on OCL4ED. We are creating new knowledge as we bring our ideas together communicating using mOOC Platform.
I agree with Atkins, Brown and Hammond with their definition of what OER is, because they have mentioned all forms of teaching resources, and that is true openness.
What about control, standardization and quality assurance?
To this I say, "BARRIERS", that we must view as a positive reminder, in all things there must be a filtering point, thus National Policies and National adoption, so OER can be included in learning prescriptions as research resources for teachers.
I would like to thank the course administrators for all the thought provoking discussions and mOOC, that has enabled me to share with and receive ideas from my colleagues abroad.

Lets carry on.

SECOND REFLECTION - OCL4ED

It is amazing the amount of learning materials and resources that is available on the web. It is a reflection that we live in a knowledgeable society. With a level of accessibility on educational resources, I notice the expansion of ideas on harnessing knowledge

Permission to Teach Article @OCL4ED

Permission to teach is a valid argument on copyright issues with regards to sharing of knowledge. I guess when knowledge is shared on the Net, it becomes public knowledge. But control methods need to be exercised, in this case CREATIVE COMMONS. As mentioned in this article that sharing of knowledge is compared to construction, where building blocks continue through reusing and remixing OER materials. One word that I like to emphasis when discussing O.E.R is accessibility and availability.  Access to vast pool of resources and what is greatly available with no limitations. Contextualizing shared knowledge to be tailor made for our local environment, without prejudice to accessibility.

Session 1 Video Post reflection@OCL4ED

I agree with Stephens opening remarks on his video sign post for #OCL4ED, that openness is about saving money. With that in mind, i let my train of thought critically explore the possibilities that will come about this, and my conclusion is that, costs incurred is a great barrier for students to further their education. With the concept of Shared knowledge on an Open Platform (O.E.R.) offers limitless opportunities, not only for students, but for teachers as a form of empowering their knowledge and the curriculum they deliver, in turn.
I agree that education is a 2 way stream, where student responses are so important. What builds there thoughts depends on the quality of material the teacher prepares to deliberate in classrooms, therefore teachers need to be exposed to what is available out there in the global pool of resources and ideas.
"THE CORE OF LEARNING IS SHARING" .... of ideas, that should be controlled through open licensing - totally agree.
